PGMA (Poly(glycidyl methacrylate), Mw 40,000–80,000) is completely insoluble in water, with no dissolution and negligible swelling.

Detailed Explanation
Polarity mismatchPGMA is a non-water-soluble polar acrylic polymer. Its molecular backbone and epoxy side groups are hydrophobic overall. Water is a highly polar protic solvent, and there is no strong intermolecular force to drive PGMA chain dispersion in water.When PGMA powder is added to pure water, it floats or sinks as intact white solid particles without spreading or dissolving.
No hydrophilic segmentsUnlike waterborne acrylics modified with carboxylate, sulfonate or polyethylene oxide chains, standard linear PGMA homopolymer contains zero hydrophilic ionic/hydrophilic repeating units, so it cannot form stable aqueous dispersion spontaneously.
Behavior in aqueous solutions
Neutral pure water: Fully insoluble
Dilute acid / dilute alkaline water: Still insoluble; weak acid/base cannot break polymer chains or improve water solubility. Long-term soaking only causes slight surface epoxy ring hydrolysis, yet the bulk polymer remains undissolved solid.
Surfactant-containing water: Can form unstable temporary suspension under high-speed stirring, but PGMA will quickly precipitate once agitation stops; this is physical dispersion, not true dissolution.
Practical application notePGMA cannot be used directly in water-based systems without modification. To apply it in waterborne coatings/adhesives, two approaches are available:
Dissolve PGMA in water-miscible co-solvents (acetone, THF, DMF) first, then emulsify into water with emulsifiers;
Chemically modify PGMA by grafting hydrophilic groups to obtain water-dispersible derivatives.
