Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is a chemical monomer with both a reactive epoxy group and a polymerizable methacrylate group. 

This bifunctional structure allows it to be used in various applications, including the production of coatings, adhesives, and plastics, to impart properties like improved adhesion and chemical resistance.

Poly(glycidyi methacryiate) Synthesis method

Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is polymerized into polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) via free radical polymerization. The double bonds in the GMA molecule open under the action of an initiator, forming the polymer backbone, while retaining epoxy groups as side chains. The high reactivity of these epoxy groups makes them valuable for subsequent functionalization applications.

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) is obtained by living anionic /GTP polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate.

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate)
: a highly versatile polymeric building block for post-polymerization modifications.

The epoxy side chains of PGMA can undergo ring-opening reactions under multiple conditions to afford functionalized polymers.

PGMA particles can be copolymerized with other acrylate or methacrylate monomer to further diversify the range of structures and applications of the final materials.

The wide range of chemistry available allows one to freely choose the nature of the functional group and the manner of the ring-opening reaction. It is this versatility that establishes PGMA as a general and powerful reactive scaffold in polymer chemistry.

Due to its epoxy group, it can be used as a stabilizer (hydrogen halide scavenger for resins containing halogen elements) for polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, chlorinated polyolefins, etc.
